Opportunities for Growth in the Bronx

L+M Grantee GrowNYC officially opened the first youth-run farmstand in the Eastchester neighborhood of the Bronx last week. The farmstand will bring fresh and affordable produce to residents Baychester, their neighbors, and the wider community, as well as empower young people to develop their entrepreneurial skills by teaching them how to operate a small business and run a farm stand in their local community.

Through GrowNYC’s Farmstand program, young people sell fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms, while learning about health, nutrition, the environment, and regional agriculture.  In addition to teaching participants about promotion, merchandising, and customer service skills, this farmstand will increase the availability of fresh produce in the Eastchester neighborhood.

The farmstand project was developed in response to the Tenant Association’s request for access to affordable, fresh food options in the community. The project would not have been possible without the support of the Baychester Tenant Association, as well as our project partners Camber Property Group and MBD Community Housing Corp.

The Eastchester Farmstand will be open to the public every Thursday through November 19 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at East 229th Street and Schieffelin Avenue in the Bronx.
