L+M’s 2022 Internship cohort included a diverse group of 23 students that gained hands-on experience across development, construction, and corporate function teams over summer.
Throughout the 10-week program, we learned about the real estate industry and witnessed firsthand how a company can create real change and have a social impact in communities. We became immersed in L+M’s mission to work together to build stronger communities, and saw the mission in action on site visits, community volunteer events, and professional development opportunities – each allowing us to come together, inspire confidence and growth for our future careers.
Throughout the summer, we visited a variety of L+M properties in different stages of construction, including the Beach Green Dunes II in Queens, Essex Crossing and the Market Line in the Lower East Side, and National Urban League and Sendero Verde, both in Harlem.
We also volunteered with The Campaign Against Hunger, a L+M grantee in Far Rockaway, that grows over 100 types of fruits and vegetables for underserved communities. This was a transformative experience, because we were able to contribute to the company’s mission of working together to build stronger communities.
The internship also provided us with professional development, training and networking opportunities that were of great value to the cohort. We learned from seasoned professionals, including L+M CEO Lisa Gomez, and joined Freddie Mac Multifamily Interns and the annual Gen-2-Gen Speaker series. Everyone that spoke with the group shared their experiences that we could apply to our professional careers.
The summer internship program truly gave the interns a well-rounded view of L+M as a vertically integrated company and helped us grow professionally in our respective fields. We gained invaluable experience that will guide us in making future career decisions and have made connections within our teams and cohort that will extend beyond this summer.
Thank you, L+M for a wonderful summer!
